Felden-WHAT?

Feldenkrais (rhymes with paradise) refers to Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, an innovator and visionary, specializing in movement. Like Joseph Pilates and many others, Moshe Feldenkrais was a forward thinker, mover and shaker in the first half of the twentieth century.

Ask any practitioner about that first awkward cocktail party moment when someone asks, "What do you do for a living?" and they respond "Feldenkrais practitioner".

Felden-WHAT? Used to be the response and even though the Feldenkrais Method® is still one of the best kept secrets in the 'movement movement', the name is becoming more recognized as people search for options to relieve pain, manage stress, and live a higher quality of life.

The Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education

The Feldenkrais Method is for anyone who wants to reconnect with their natural abilities to move, think, and feel. Whether you want to be more comfortable sitting at your computer, playing with your children and grandchildren, or performing a favorite pastime, these gentle lessons can improve you overall well being.

Learning to move with less effort makes daily life easier. Because the Feldenkrais Method focuses on the relationship between movement and thought, increased mental awareness and creativity accompany physical improvements. Everyone, from athletes and artists to administrators and attorneys, can benefit from the Feldenkrais Method.

After experiencing Feldenkrais® lessons, people often express feelings of relaxation and ease. They may breathe more freely and find their thoughts have more clarity. The learning process is full of pleasant surprises and personal breakthroughs.

Feldenkrais lessons teach you the means to take charge of your own improvement and are offered in two ways, enabling you to discover which learning style is most appropriate for your needs. Regardless of which learning style you choose, the Feldenkrais Method can help you overcome limitations brought on by stress, misuse, accident, or illness.

Awareness Through Movement® or ATM

Instead of a place to withdraw from the personal account, this is where you hit the jackpot in finding countless new ways to move through verbally guided classes. Practitioners use precision language to direct you through a sequence of movements that help you find easier ways to connect through the support of the bones in order to find your most efficient, pain-free way and fun way of moving the muscles in everyday actions such as bending, turning, and reaching. Many people enjoy ATM as their regular movement classes in conjunction with yoga, Pilates and NIA®.

Functional Integration or FI

Some people would say FI stands for "Fantastically Incredible". As a client, you lie on a padded table in comfortably clothed and the practitioner moves you with the intention of helping you recognize through passive movement how you are moving and more importantly showing you through directed touch where there are more possibilities. Many practitioners will give a brief ATM lesson for you to do at home in between FI sessions. The two modalities of Functional Integraton® and Awareness Through Movement® can be enjoyed separately, however, are usually most beneficial in some combination. You decide what works best for you.
